Overview

What is Misfits Market?

Misfits Market is the online value grocer dedicated to making affordable, high-quality food more accessible while helping break the cycle of food waste. We work directly with farmers and food producers to source organic produce, high-quality meats and seafood, sustainable pantry staples, and other groceries that might otherwise go to waste and deliver them to you at up to 40% off grocery store prices.

How it Works

With your free membership to Misfits Market, you unlock access to seasonal organic produce and high-quality, sustainably sourced groceries at prices that are hard to find in traditional grocery stores. Simply log into your account during your three-day shopping window—check your account for the exact day and time it opens—and build your order ($30 minimum from any of the hundreds of grocery items we carry.) We add new items every week, from pantry staples and proteins to dairy and specialty treats, so you can cross off more of your grocery list, skip the trip to the store, and spend up to 40% less on groceries. Your order can be edited at any time throughout your shopping window and will be charged after your shopping window ends. Your order will be delivered right to your home within 2-3 days for a flat shipping fee—no membership fees or tips necessary.

How Your Food is Sourced

We partner with hand-picked farms and food hubs across the Americas and occasionally beyond, depending on seasonality (see the full list of what we’re rescuing now) to source certified-organic fresh produce for our boxes. We offer fresh organic produce (e.g., citrus and avocados) sourced outside the U.S. to give you a variety of options to complete your weekly grocery shopping. Our goal is to fight food waste wherever we see inefficiencies in the food system.

We also source cooking supplies, pantry staples, and all of the items you’d find in a grocery store in a similarly sustainable way. We work with food brands to take in excess inventory—ranging from surplus to out-of-date packaging to short-dated items. (Short-dated means goods stamped with a “best-by” date that’s fewer than 6 weeks out.)

For meats and seafood, we have strict sourcing standards and partners who are transparent about their methods to ensure that you can feel good about what goes into the production of the high-quality meats and seafood we carry. We’ve also hand-picked suppliers that have found innovative ways to minimize environmental impact by avoiding industrialized farming while still making high-quality products that are affordable.

Why We Like It

Why should I use Misfits Market?

Besides helping you save on your weekly grocery costs, your free membership with Misfits Market helps us fix a broken food system. This distressing fact is really what started it all: Almost a third of what’s grown in the U.S. never gets harvested because it doesn’t meet the superficial standards of a traditional grocery store. Because we work closely with farmers and food makers, we know just how much food is going to waste every single day.

By being committed to fighting food waste, we’ve unlocked a new way to make healthy, quality food more affordable for more people. Customers build their grocery order each week from hundreds of items offered at up to 40% off grocery store prices. Every Misfits Market order benefits farmers and makers, helps prevent food waste, and ultimately helps save our environment.

How is this food “different” from what’s in grocery stores?

We get direct access to the good stuff that you’d typically pay a premium for elsewhere because it’s excess supply, sometimes looks a little different, or is cheaper because we cut out the middleman. For produce, that means fruits and veggies that are too big, too small, or just sort of funny-looking. Oftentimes, though, it’s produce that’s simply considered surplus. Regardless of how it looks, our stuff tends to be fresher than what you’d find in stores because it doesn’t hang out with middlemen or in storage.

We also offer high-quality pantry staples that are sourced in a similarly sustainable way. We work with food brands to take in excess inventory—ranging from surplus to out-of-date packaging to short-dated items. (Short-dated means goods stamped with a “best-by” date that’s fewer than 6 weeks out.)
